With the popular increase for non-invasive skin enhancement treatments, a variety of dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane have become readily available to physicians.

When choosing the types of dermal fillers that may be best suited for you, it is important to select a physician who uses various kinds of products and can explain why one is more appropriate for you than another.

These fillers vary due to the material they may be composed of, their application, number of treatments required, and the time for which they may last, and if they are animal based. The collagen fillers which were very popular in the past are animal based.

More common fillers used in present-day aesthetic dermatology are hyaluronic acid based which is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. Examples of these are Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. These fillers help to improve the youthful appearance and fullness of facial skin.

It is important to know that no one dermal filler is ideal for all the areas of the face. To clarify for example, lips tolerate fillers differently than the cheeks area does and not all fillers can be injected in the lips.

In certain cases, multiple fillers can be used in various places of the face to improve the entire facial aesthetics. This process is termed as a liquid face lift. Hyaluronic acid fillers have gained in popularity due to their safely over collagen based fillers. Because hyaluronic acid is a part of our body there is no pre-testing required prior to the treatment. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps in moisture retention thus adding volume and hydration to the skin.

At the Laser Genesis Skin Care Clinic we recommend the use of Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane fillers. All these can be used in conjunction with Botox and other non-invasive laser treatments. Fillers provide an excellent option for the modern woman or man on the go who does not want to deal with the inconvenience and downtime of facial surgery.

Juvederm is FDA approved and is considered to be the next generation of dermal filler. It has a smooth gel like consistency, thus making it very easy to administer with little or no bruising at all. It is safe for all skin types. The manufacturers of Juvederm have strived to make it as long lasting as possible by concentrating the product.

Frequently asked questions?

Their highly innovative manufacturing process generates an extensive cross linking, i.e. a dense network of bridge type bonds between different molecules of hyaluronic acid. The resultant molecule is larger and therefore more resistant to in situ degradation, thus lasting for a longer time after injecting in the skin.

Juvederm injectable gel is used for the lower third of the facial wrinkles and folds. It is best suited for laugh lines, smile lines or nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Juvederm is a simple non-surgical physician administered treatment.

These treatments require only superficial anaesthesia or a topical numbing cream to make them more comfortable. Juvederm is administered under the skin with a very fine needle to augment or fill the soft tissue of the dermis. Afterwards, the site is then gently massaged.

Side effects with Juvederm are very mild to minimal lasting up to a week or less. The side effects include temporary sensitivity, redness, firmness, mild pain, swelling or bumps. Normal day to day activities can be resumed soon after the treatment though it is advised to avoid strenuous activities, excessive sun or heat exposure.

Immediate improvement and smoothening of wrinkles and lines is seen following the treatment. The results of the treatment vary with each individual and the effect of Juvederm may last from six months to nine months. Touch up treatments is recommended to achieve and maintain the results.

Restylane is an FDA approved non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid based filler. It is purified, sterilized and chemically stabilized gel produced from streptococcus bacter

Due to its low incidence of hypersensitivity and reactions, it requires no skin testing prior to the treatment. The stabilized hyaluronic acid can remain in the dermis for upto a year. Restylane gel is injected into the dermal layers using a very fine needle.

Frequently asked questions?

Topical or local aesthetic is required prior to the treatment to make it more comfortable.

After the Restylane is injected under the skin it integrates with the dermis and binds water giving the area a fuller appearance. Normal metabolism and movements of nutrition and oxygen proceeds naturally.

Lip augmentation is one of the more popular uses of Restylane. The amount of Restylane that the physician may use during the treatment depends on the desired correction.

Although all normal activities can be resumed following the treatment some mild bruising and swelling may be seen. This may last up to a week. Lip swelling and discomfort can be significant and some asymmetry may be noted during the first week.

Perlane is also a hyaluronic acid based cosmetic filler used to soften fine lines and wrinkles. It is a popular choice to smooth out facial depression, facial scarring and lip augmentation. It is a safe choice for both men and women.

Due to its composition of hyaluronic acid, the Perlane molecule is a resilient chemical and can easily adjust and mould to facial contours. No pre-treatment testing of the skin is required with Perlane.

The natural supply of hyaluronic acid depletes with age and due to environmental factors we start to see the setting of expression lines and folds.

Frequently asked questions?
